The 3 things you MUST know about a Misfuel!

AdBlue In Your Diesel

In Bedfordshire we have noticed progressively more occurrences of AdBlue contamination wherein a motorist has put AdBlue directly into their diesel tank. This is to a degree a result of drivers not understanding the right way to to make use of (important: it is not a fuel additive), and partially simply because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are typically directly next to each other on the automobile.

Now, what is the situation with putting AdBlue in your diesel car?

Seeing as AdBlue is primarily ionised water, it's nearly as good as putting water in your tank. Diesel and water don't mix in the least and trying to run a diesel car on water isn't going to work. Moreover, the urea is very corrosive to fuel system hoses and seals and is at risk of crystalising, obstructing injectors and fuel filters. If perhaps you put AdBlue into your fuel tank empty it as soon as possible. And most definitely take care not to start up the motor - not even to shift it into a parking bay. Assuming you did start the vehicle you may likely need to have the entire fuel system purged and fuel filters replaced.

If perhaps you get in this position don’t fret or panic! Call us, the UK’s Number 1 fuel contamination service. Our experts have got the practical expertise and experience to have you back on your way quickly and efficiently, no mess, no hassle.

Wrong Fuel in Car London - Petrol in Diesel Car Biggleswade

I'm certainly not very excited about doing the job Sundays, and last week was the same. I had just departed the family after a superb Sunday roast made for us by the missus, and I was on my way to assist a guy who had filled the wrong fuel in his rust red Austin Mini Cooper S. He was only in Biggleswade hence I arrived on scene before long. Just as I arrived at the car and got busy draining he told me "Praise the Lord! I foolishly had my attention on other considerations and failed to ascertain I've put the wrong fuel in my petrol car. Have I inflicted some problems by simply driving it?" I said there probably should not be any harm and that also I'd personally get the wrong fuel drained immediately for him. As expected I got the contaminated fuel drained from the car and filled it with some correct fuel, and thus one more happy customer could continue on his ride without the need for hassle. He could not stop saying thanks to me, and that is actually what makes working on Sundays in Bedfordshire just a tiny bit easier in my opinion!

Wrong Fuel Doctor Biggleswade - Fuel Rescue Biggleswade

This was certainly the graveyard shift. It was around dawn and almost noone was about. It was rather quiet so far, and John and I were sitting around perusing a few old articles. This was a rare calm time in Bedfordshire. Actually it was indeed so peaceful that when the telephone inevitably rang I jumped with surprise! The customer said: "I only just completed my evening shift and incredibly filled petrol in the apricot Mitsubishi Precis by mistake". We asked him to inform us where the car was situated and we left, ending up in Biggleswade only 30 minutes later. The wrong fuel was cleared from the vehicle and he thanked us for coming so fast. While we were heading back to the office we noticed two girls at the side of the street who seemed like they had a flat. Obviously we pulled up and helped them change it, to their elation.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
